I remember how crazy I thought it was that people actually take supplements like protein daily. Often multiple times a day. Now, I am firmly one of those guys.
As with anything, once we understand it, it becomes less foreign and intimidating.
Now, I know there are some purists out there who scoff at supplements and claim to get everything their body needs by only eating whole foods.
It’s definitely possible and if you have what it takes to eat sufficient high quality meats and vegetables to get your nutrients up on a daily basis then I give it the thumbs up for sure! You’re a better man than I.
However, if you’re like me and find that your nutrient intake from real food varies day to day, then supplementing the rest with is 100% fine.
Just to make sure all you budding athletes out there are staying on the right track I put together a list of my top 5 supplements that I cycle in regularly throughout the year.
- 100% Whey Protein:
The sole purpose of protein is to build and maintain muscle. To be anabolic and, you need about 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. This might be difficult for may of us out there to get from meat everyday, so supplementing a couple scraps of Whey protein is a great option.
Why Whey? Whey is a fast acting protein that gets into the blood stream quickly. Its also a “complete protein” meaning it has a full list of all the branch chain amino acids needed to build muscle tissue. I personally always look for a protein powder with zero artificial flavoring and coloring. I want the pure stuff.
- Superfood formula:
How sure are you that you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need everyday? Unless you’re putting down a couple hundred grams of vegetables per day then chances are you might be deficient. In my humble opinion a multi-vitamin is worthless.
Ditch the synthetic pills and go for the real stuff. A couple table spoons of Dr. Shultz’s Superfoods plus or Green Vibrance in your morning shake will start your day off with a potent dose of natural, plant based vitamins and minerals.
- Fish oil:
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, promote everything from healthy hair and nails to improved eye sight. It also helps keep inflammation down and lowers triglycerides in our blood stream. Omega-3’s are powerful antioxidants that remove free radicals from our body.
Look for Fish Oils with higher levels of DHA than EPA. DHA has greater health benefits.
L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid found in plant and animal protein, but you can also supplement it in powder form (like I do). Glutamine plays a large role in protein synthesis by promoting muscle growth and athletic performance. It also plays a large role in brain health and digestion.
There was a time when creatine was looked at as dangerous. However, as with anything once enough studies were done around it, and we finally understood it, research has concluded that its actually pretty awesome stuff.
Creatine is found in red meat, because all animals store this molecule in there muscle tissue for immediate energy. When supplemented, we essentially saturate our muscle tissue with more creatine molecules. This translate into increase size, strength and performance.
In fact, creatine is the only clinically proven over the counter supplement to increase muscle mass and over all performance. Researchers are even finding improved cognitive functions as a result of supplementing creatine.
There you have it folks! My top 5 supplements that I take on a regular basis. If you have any questions or would like some specific brand recommendations fell free to email me.
