When I first moved to LA in 2012, I quickly became the heaviest I had ever been. Chalk it up to the cross country move, tight post-grad budget, and overall extremely poor eating habits – it was bad. Overall, I was unhappy and knew I needed a change so I tried a variety of fitness classes but none of them really stuck. A personal trainer I had worked with told me I needed to try CrossFit so I naturally watched all of the YouTube videos I could find and completely freaked myself out. No way could I do that stuff! One of my coworkers at the time showed me his before and after pictures from CrossFit and encouraged me to try. So I found StrengthRx and I thought it was cool that the owner was a fellow Michigander and I decided to sign up. Yeah, that was the selling point…
At my first Fundamentals class with Mike we only worked with a PVC pipe and I asked for multiple breaks because I thought I was going to pass out. My legs were so tired by the end of the class that I barely made it across Melrose to my car. I was so intimidated but I kept coming back. The best part about StrengthRx is the community they’ve built, starting with the coaches. I wasn’t lifting a lot of weight when I first started but they sure made me feel like I was and that was all I needed. I’m no longer terrified of CrossFit after 3 years. I may dread the workouts but I know I can make it through them!
I think I am most proud of my overall transformation. Not only am I in the best shape of my life, but I’m also the most confident I’ve ever been. As if I didn’t already think women can do anything men can do (and sometimes better) – CrossFit has been such a positive influence in really driving that point home. I love being able to lift as much as the men and I love that my body reflects all of my hard work!
I never thought these words would come out of my mouth but my current goal is to compete in an Olympic Weightlifting competition. I have found my love of weightlifting and think its time to take that to the next level. Mike and I are currently working to achieve that goal in 2017! Ah!
It’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite memory from my time at SRX since I’ve spent so much time with people from there! I’d have to say that I was incredibly honored to win the award for “Most Improved” at the Anniversary party in 2015. I was just going to the gym for myself and never expected my hard work to be recognized like that. In fact, I’m so proud of that award that I keep it on my mantle for everyone to see!
