I always heard of CrossFit but it was mainly through negative press and the dangers of people getting injured. A friend from Australia was here last year with her boyfriend (whom competed at the games), and resolved any doubt I had. They got me excited to join. StrengthRx was close to my house so it was a no brainer (and no excuse not to go).
My first impression was “this is easy” as I was doing the fundamentals classes. It wasn’t until my first BurnRx class that I soon learned how out of shape I really was. Even though I was already on a weight loss kick, my tolerance soon built up and I was at least getting through classes without wanting to die. My first CrossFit class wasn’t a month until after I had signed up. Thankfully the BurnRx classes helped me get ready for it (Mixed Levels). I’ve also learned to go at my own pace instead of competing with others, something that seems to happen naturally as a male (feeling the need to compete).
I’m most proud of all the weight I’ve lost. I’m almost back to my pre-college weight. Freshmen year I weighed 200 pounds at Washington State University. When I graduated, I had peaked at 280. Currently I’m sitting at 207.
My next goal is to reach 200lbs and get under 25% Body fat. (sitting at 28% currently). And knock out 5 unassisted pull-ups!
I’m still relatively new (4 months) but my favorite moment by far has to be the motivation and excitement I’ve shown to friends that has sparked their interest in CrossFit simply because I now do it. I have friends and coworkers alike that have battled weight loss and to see a positive impact from someone they personally know is been inspiring to them to make changes in their life as well. Whether at their own gym or my pitch to join CrossFit, I can tell people are listening now.
